A Criminologist’s Dairy-23

Robbing Customers to make OFFER

Visit any malls here, one will be just shocked to see the offers-20% OFF,50% OFF,70% OFF- BUY 2 and GET I FREE-Life Long Warranty and OH, GOD ! these malls are meant only for offers!! I asked Neethie: "What is the profit for these people if they give 70% OFF ?"

She said in reply: " Appacha,it is business and offers too are business for them"

"Do they cheat us?"- I asked again." There is a feeling among the people that these business men put a very high price and then make offers. Even when they give all these OFFERS, still they benefit. It is a sort of cheating served in a golden plate in a glorified manner. Don't you agree?"

In Kerala and for that matter, any city in India, during festive seasons, the market is flooded with all sorts of offers and OFFs, exchange offers and every offer is attractive-very attractive. When one takes his old item for exchange, he gets an amount which may not be enough for transporting it to the shop. Once I purchased a saree for my wife for an offer price and believe me, it got fire when it had a contact with a sofa cum bed covered with rexin. Qualitatively, all third rate products are sold out during the festive seasons under OFFERS. Clearance sale under with a lot of offers and once we purchase them, we feel that we are cheated.

Offers are given by hotels, hospitals, health clubs, textile shops, electronic shops, grocery shops, other shops, tourist resorts etc. and there are door-to- door sale girls and boys who make offers and OFFS. Daily newspapers carry notices containing information about offers and Offs. But, I find a difference between the OFFs and offers here in USA and the same there in Kerala (India). In USA, if the customer is not satisfied, he can return the products and many malls take them back without questioning. In Kerala, once an item is purchased, it is never taken back whatever may be the defects of the purchased item.' Once cheated, then cheated forever'- and no sympathy or consideration towards the purchaser, particularly when the product is purchased during a SALE or under OFFERS.

We do not have proper laws to regulate the OFFERS and Offs. There should be effective and proper laws regulating OFFERs and OFFs, because many jewelry shops, malls, clubs etc. makes offers and OFFs in one thing and take away our money on another counts.' Robbing Peter to pay Paul'-i.e., robbing customers to give OFFERs and OFFs to them is a calculated and glorified cheating that gets accelerated momentum in these days.

"Yes", Neethie said:" This is business and business is money" for the business man." Offers and Offs too are a business" without any regulations whatsoever!
