A Criminologist’s Diary-31

Flourishing SEX INDUSTRY!

SEX crimes reported in USA are plenty and incredibly higher than the same reported in India. Owing to several factors-especially cultural, religious and traditional-the sex crimes are rarely reported in India and thus do not catch the attention of police to set the law into motion. When you go anywhere in USA, the boys and girls mix and mingle more liberally and without much sex barriers constructed between them. Premarital interactions between boys and girls and knowing each other closely are a must before settling the marriage between them. In spite of the mixing and mingling of two complimentary sexes, sex crimes are on the increase, sometimes in a frightening way.

What about us in India? In India, there exists a lot of restrictions and controls in the mixing and mingling of boys and girls. Social, cultural, familial, religious and parental controls make the boys see girls only from a distance and vice versa. Yet, sex crimes are on the increase. Though the statistics relating to sex crimes may not be that frightening, criminologists are of the firm view that the unreported sex crimes are beyond human calculations. Whatever that be, a report about sex industry in India, published a few years ago, says that the sex industry is having a turnover of more than 43000 crores of India rupees annually! Formerly, girls between the ages of 16-21 were in demand whereas now the age has been lowered down to 11-18(?) years! About 200 girls are transported from one part of the country to another everyday (?) and recruitment of new ones to the industry is in full swing. Those who run the industry have huge income and thus the industry is flourishing incredibly well. Sex albums, sex photos, blue films, C.Ds, DVD productions, sex works, mobile sexual recreations, door to door sex, casinos etc., are a part of the sex industry.

In spite of all these, the news about sex crimes appearing in the media may be quite alarming and disturbing. Sex crimes are committed at home, work places, schools and colleges, industrial estates, hotels, resorts and massage centers, railway cabins, tourists' spots, star hotels, brothels and thus practically there is no place where the crime is not taking place! Connected to them are the kidnappings, abductions, elopements, false recruitments, forced entries, cheatings, fake promises to give chances to act in films and T.V. serials, production of song albums, modeling, and reality shows etc. Almost all types of people from every walks of life from the rich to the poor, from the powerful to the powerless, from the influential to the helpless are accused of involving in many forms of sex crimes. What to do?
