A Criminologist's Diary-33

A Criminologist’s Diary-33

Nexus Crimes and Honorable Men

See any news channel in any T.V. about India and one may hear about nexus crimes, corruption and politicians’ vandalism. Nexus crimes-i.e., unholy nexus among leaders, bureaucrats, businessmen and bandits to amass wealth and money in various forms are reported in abundance. In one case it is more than 150000 crores of Indian rupees and in another case it is about 200000 crores of Indian rupees. Politicians are involved and the Ministers of the ruling Government are accused of having nexus partnership in such criminal activities. Of late, it is learnt that a Joint Parliamentary Committee inquiry is going to be instituted. Most surprisingly and frustratingly enough, political parties are supporting the nexus transactions and justify the nexus partners. Whether the political party benefitted or the politicians benefitted [or both] is a question of dispute. Investigations will be conducted and many meaningless investigations will go on endlessly and infinitely. The Governments may come and they may go. The investigating officials will come and they also will go. The interest and enthusiasm seen presently will gradually be lessened and there will come a time when the investigation of nexus crimes becomes ‘no body’s baby’. Is there any case so far registered and investigated by any investigating agency culminating in the conviction of a political leader? If there is any, the politician may be of an insignificant type with no followers. Just recently, a politician was punished in Kerala by the Supreme Court of India after about two decades of legal battle. Now a lot of political parties come forward to support him and his political followers organize strikes, road blocks and dharnas against the verdict of the Court. Some religious leaders too speak in favour of the politician who was punished for his alleged nexus dealings. The media is full of such nexus crimes, justifications, rationalizations, glorifications and what not? He is made the ‘HERO’ of the time. While the Parliament has problems in transacting business because of the ‘stilling’ of its activities by vested interests inside, no one, it seems, is bothered very much about it as everybody is after a never ending-meaningless-purposeless investigation of nexus crimes.

Nexus crimes may be seen in other parts of the world. But, everywhere the same patterns are noticed so much so that nexus crimes make all partners “ HONOURABLE MEN” in society. This is perhaps the curse of the democracy
